Executive Summary:

This report provides a detailed description of Water is Life and Food to Survive project implemented in Elfashir IDPs gathering center. The project is aimed at providing water to the IDPs. The program is considered to be a lifesaving which addresses the immediate needs of the people. This report also outlines the achievements and challenges faced during the implementation and recommendation. The project was funded with the generous support of individuals and kind-hearted people through GlobalGiving.

  1. Introduction:

Sudan is experiencing one of the most challenging periods in its contemporary history politically, alongside what has been described as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis; approximately 25 million people are suffering from extreme hunger. The situation in Darfur is particularly dire, considered more dangerous and worse than other parts of Sudan. Access to basic human needs is limited, and the region is facing a cholera outbreak.

 2. Overview the humanitarian situation in Darfur:

2.1.  Famine and Nutrition: There are areas in North Darfur and other parts where apparent famine has been confirmed, and there is a risk of it spreading to other areas if aid does not reach them.

2.2.  Siege on El Fasher: El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, is besieged by the Rapid Support Forces, cutting off supply lines and leading to shortages of food, medicine, and basic services.

2.2.1.     The city has been under siege for more than two years by the Rapid Support Forces.

2.2.2.     The siege includes earthen berms surrounding the city (extending 68 km at one point), restricting movement in and out of the city and hindering the arrival of supplies.

2.2.3.     International bodies have condemned the siege and called for its end.

2.3.  Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Darfur: Large numbers of those IDPs within Darfur, particularly those in IDP camps, suffer from poor sanitation, unsafe water, and the spread of diseases such as malaria and cholera.

2.4.  Security and Protection: There are shelling and attacks on camps, residential areas, schools, and hospitals. Civilians are at risk of murder, rape, abduction, and massacres.

 3. Project overview and Description:

As part of humanitarian efforts to improve the living conditions of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and other conflict affected populations in North Darfur State, a vital project has been implemented in El-Fasher Darfur, to distribute clean drinking water at IDPs gathering centers across the city. This project is generously supported by individuals through GlobalGiving, which continues its humanitarian work in the region in collaboration with local.

This project aims to provide safe and clean drinking water to more than 800 IDPs families residing in two main gathering centers within the city. These centers were identified based on the extent of need and the number of families residing within them. These communities suffer from limited access to safe water, making this intervention critical in maintaining public health and reducing the risk of diseases associated with contaminated water.

4. Purpose

The significance and the main purpose of this project was to water to the neediest people from the conflict affected population with specific goals outlined below:

4.1.  Alleviating the suffering of displaced people: Providing clean water contributes to alleviating the daily burden on families who previously had to travel long distances in search of water.

4.2.  Promoting Public Health: Reducing the spread of waterborne diseases, such as acute diarrhea, typhoid, and cholera, which pose a significant threat in crowded displacement settings.

4.3.  Preventing girls from sexual abuse

4.4.  Stabilization support: enhancing the sense of security and stability in shelters, allowing humanitarian organizations to focus on providing additional services

4.5.  To Promote Social Cohesion and Community Resilience.

 5. Project implementation:

The project was implemented in El-Fasher, under the leadership and supervision of a specialized field team from PTP, in coordination with of university professors as well as community’s leaders of the gathering centers.

6.  Beneficiaries:

The primary beneficiaries of this project are IDPs at living at the bellow gathering centers:

6.1.  University IDPs gathering center

6.2.  Darja Ulla IDPs gathering center

 7. The New Tragedy Worsening the Humanitarian Situation in Darfur:

The combination of civil war and natural disasters facing displaced people in Darfur is one of the most complex and painful crises. The suffering often began with displacement from conflict zones for fear of violence, bombing, or persecution. Then after temporary settlement in Jebel Marra villages, natural disasters such as: landslides, floods or fires destroyed the fragile shelter. Such disasters destroy agricultural lands and wells, increasing the risk of famine and malnutrition, especially for children. The current conflict forced hundreds of thousands of families to flee from different parts of Darfur/Sudan to Jebel Marra seeking protection and survival.

 8. The Urgent Need for Humanitarian Intervention in Darfur:

The foundational need for humanitarian intervention in Darfur is urgent due to the ongoing catastrophe caused by conflict and natural disasters such as landslides. Today, millions of internally displaced persons (IDPs) depend entirely on food and medical aid. Malnutrition is worsening among children, and aid access is increasingly threatened by insecurity. The priority is to provide food, healthcare, and safe access routes, while addressing security and logistical challenges that hinder aid delivery

9. Challenges Facing Humanitarian Intervention in Darfur:

9.1.  Insecurity The unstable security environment makes it extremely difficult for aid to reach those in need.

9.2.  Access Issues Humanitarian supply routes, including those through Chad, suffer from diversion and disruption.

9.3.  Internal Displacement Hundreds of thousands of IDPs are displaced from their homes and require support in insecure environments.

9.4.  Lack of a Culture of Trust The absence of a functioning state hampers aid distribution effort.

 10. What are the Urgent and Basic Needs:

10.1.               Food In Darfur, millions including children are in dire need of food, with malnutrition rates rising. This situation signals the early stages of famine.

10.2.               Health There is an urgent need for primary healthcare, life-saving medical assistance, and health interventions.

10.3.               Shelter and Clean Water Providing shelter and access to clean water is vital to protect civilians from disease and harsh conditions.

11.  Recommendations:

11.1.               Providing more mater and food to the suffering people

11.2.               Non-Food Items (NFI) are needed

11.3.               Income generating activities to sustain their livelihood.

11.4.               Cash Based Interventions (CBI)

11.5.               Social peace project is essential across Darfur

Conclusion:

People-to-People (PTP) would like to express our gratitude for the generous support the GlobalGiving has been doing to Sudan, particularly to the conflict-affected population in Darfur. The GlobalGiving’s commitment to Humanitarian services, social peace and dignity in Sudan is deeply appreciated.
