Keeping Families Together in Times of Crisis

By Tina Moira | Project Leader

Dear Supporter,

Over the last couple of months, we have been working to support families in desperate need and prevent child abandonment due to poverty. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to provide vital aid to a mother of six children, including a one-month-old baby, after her husband was involved in a serious accident. The family has been facing extreme hardship as the father, who was previously the primary provider, remains unable to work due to severe injuries and a recent diagnosis of tuberculosis.

The accident occurred a few months ago while the father, who worked as a cab driver using a horse and cart, was transporting an acquaintance. Tragically, the accident resulted in the loss of both the passenger and the horse, leaving him with multiple fractures and requiring extended hospitalization. As a result, the mother has been left to care for her injured husband while raising their five older children and newborn alone.

In many cases, when families face such overwhelming circumstances, parents are forced to go abroad to find work, leaving their children behind. This often results in social orphans—children who, though not technically orphaned, grow up without parental care. Our programmes are designed to keep families together and prevent abandonment, ensuring that children can grow up in a safe and loving environment despite adversity.

Recognizing the family’s urgent needs, we provided:

  • Warm clothing, including pajamas and sweatshirts for the children.
  • Food supplies to ensure the family has access to nutritious meals.
  • Hygiene products, including nappies for the baby, to support daily care needs.

Besides this, our partner Family Love, Transnistria provides additional help, such as firewood to keep families warm during the winter and extra care packages for holidays like Christmas, ensuring that families not only receive essential aid but also experience warmth and joy during special times of the year.

These provisions, though basic, have been a lifeline for the family during this challenging time. Our support is not only providing immediate relief, but also helping keep hope alive as they navigate this difficult period.

The family remains resilient despite their circumstances, and our continued support is crucial in helping them rebuild their lives. By providing essential aid, we are ensuring that families stay together, preventing children from becoming social orphans and giving them the stability they need to thrive.

With gratitude,
ChildAid to Eastern Europe
