Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, the TELL Lifeline continues to provide toll-free access. As a result, we have seen a significant 30% increase in monthly contacts, particularly among early to mid-teens.
Many of these young people reach out to discuss their struggles with anxiety, loneliness, and depression. They often feel disconnected from purpose and from themselves. Others call because of strained relationships with partners or family. More distressingly, some are coping with abuse or even thoughts of suicide.
It takes tremendous courage for these young people to pick up the phone and share their struggles. In their everyday lives, they are often met with scorn, ridicule, or well-meaning but unhelpful advice like, “Things will get better.” The Lifeline offers something different—a place where they can speak openly and honestly with someone who truly listens and gives them the time and space to feel what they’re feeling.
Many of the challenges these youth face are not easily resolved. They require time, patience, and bravery to navigate. That’s why it is so critical that safe spaces like the Lifeline remain available. This consistency reminds young people who are struggling that they are not alone, and that someone genuinely wants to hear what they have to say.
Moving forward this year, we are launching a Lifeline Awareness Campaign aimed at schools and universities. Our goal is to spread the word that support is available and just a phone call away. Your continued support helps keep these lines open so we can be there for every young person who reaches out for help.
We are also calling on institutions and organizations that work with youth to join us in our mission to prevent youth suicide by participating in our annual Step-Up Challenge. This initiative honors the 20,320 people who lost their lives to suicide last year in Japan, including 529 youth and young adults.
In a world grappling with loneliness, your support removes one more barrier to connection. Thank you for standing with us and with these brave young people.
