Thank you for Making a Difference

Dear Friend,

October 10th is World Mental Health Day, and an opportunity to reflect on the fact that youth mental health and suicide remain a critical issue.

In 2025, Japan ranked 32nd of 36 among developed countries for children’s mental wellbeing, a stark contrast to its first place for physical health. Last year, while overall suicide rates in the country fell, 538 elementary to high school students died by suicide, the highest number on record. More of these deaths occurred in September than any other month, reflecting the impact of school-related struggles on young people’s mental health. Although 50% of student suicides were linked to school difficulties, young people also faced family problems, abuse, and health concerns.

These figures remind us of the importance of safe, supportive spaces where young people can feel heard, understood, and less alone.

In 2026, your support has helped us to connect with more young people on our Lifeline, with 905 contacts from users aged 18 or under over the first 9 months of the year, a 17% increase on the same period in 2025. We’ve also been able to increase access to our chat service, where young users prefer to reach out.

Your generosity and support helped us to:

  • Deliver 23 workshops and seminars at schools or organizations working with children and youth. These sessions equip young people and the adults in their lives with knowledge about mental health and available support. This includes QPR Gatekeeper training, which allows people not only to be aware of the signs that someone may be thinking about suicide, but also have the confidence to start a conversation and make a meaningful difference in the lives of those around them.
  • Reach more people in the community and raise awareness of mental health. Through our annual activities like Tokyo Tower Climb and our current Step Up Challenge, we have engaged people around Japan and beyond to move for mental health and take a moment to check in on those around them.
  • Show young people in the LGBTQ+ community that they are seen, valued and supported. Your donations have also helped us to take part in Pride events around Japan, and allowed us to stand alongside those who may face increased risk of bullying, school difficulties, and thoughts of suicide.

As we enter the final quarter of the year, we remain committed to letting young people know that they belong, they are important, and we are here to listen. Your support means that we can continue doing that - thank you.

With gratitude,

The TELL Team
