Make Ramadhan Special for Khalalio Girls School

By Dr. Abdullahi Hersi | Executive Director

In response to the challenges faced by students and teachers at Khalalio Girls Secondary School in Mandera County, Kenya, Nomadic Assistance for Peace and Development (NAPAD) launched a fundraising initiative to support a Ramadhan food drive. The goal of the campaign was to raise funds to purchase locally sourced food items for 180 students and 10 teachers during the holy month of Ramadhan.

Khalalio Girls Secondary School serves a largely vulnerable student population, many of whom face significant food insecurity. During Ramadhan, the lack of access to adequate meals for iftar and suhoor can negatively impact students’ ability to focus and perform academically.

By addressing this basic need, the initiative aimed not only to support the students’ physical well-being but also to enhance their academic performance. When students are well-nourished, they are more likely to engage in learning and retain information. Similarly, teachers benefit from improved energy and focus, allowing them to deliver lessons more effectively.

By running this campaign, NAPAD learned the importance of having a detailed fundraising plan and the need to understand our target audience. Knowing who our potential donors are and what motivates them is important towards the success of digital fundraising appeals. Crafting tailored messages that resonate with donor interests and values significantly enhances engagement.

Additionally, clear, compelling stories that communicate the urgency of the need and the tangible impact of each donation are essential in connecting with supporters. NAPAD also recognized the role of social media as an important tool in reaching a wider audience. Finally, we recognized the value of reflection and analyzing what worked well and what could be improved.

Although this particular fundraising effort did not yield financial contributions, it served as a valuable learning opportunity and a stepping stone toward building more effective and sustainable resource mobilization efforts in the future.
