BridgIT started its elephant/wildlife conservation water wells project in early 2023. Since then we have managed to compete over 30 projects serving around 11,000 people. While not all of the funding came from this GlobalGiving fundraiser, we are proud that our supporters on this platform have stepped up to kick off this important project where the people are trading water for wildlife conservation.
The projects are located around the Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve on the west side of Lake Malawi. In this area, only 63% of the population has access to potable water and 37% of the boreholes are not functioning. The women, who have the gender role of water collection, waste hours daily in their search for surface water that could be spent in more productive ways. This is so important because about 51% of the people in this area live below the poverty line. It is clear that resolving the water crisis by fixing broken boreholes is an absolutely necessary step for these people to graduate from extreme poverty.
BridgIT’s goal in this all-volunteer journey that we’ve been on since 2009 is poverty reduction. The UN recognizes poverty as the most critical issue facing people in the developing world: Sustainable Development Goal #1 is poverty reduction. SDG Goal #6, WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) is also critical to so many people. With your help, we can do so much more to help people living in rural Malawi villages to lead a better life. Thank you for supporting this fundraising campaign.
