Local initiative to Create Mangrove Forest in Bangladesh

By Md. Maksudur Rahman | Project Leader

Local initiative to Create Mangrove Forest in Bangladesh in terms of climate change adaptation and mitigation. So, our dedicated people fully engaged themselves with mangrove sapling production, plantation and maintenance activities.

Today we love to share some photos that the local people shared with us.

Noted that your

Donations up to $50 to this project are eligible for a 50% match *

So, we are encouraging you to keep your hands to support us for creating mangrove forest for the following benefits;

  • Mangroves will provide a protective barrier for the community and their homes, which are often situated close to the shoreline and near the embankment.
    • Lots of livelihoods opportunities (mangrove nursery, bee keeping, pickle making, Nipa Molasses) will be created in rely with the afforested mangroves.
    • People will get lot of Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) like nipa palm, Kewra fruit, fish, crab etc. As lots of livelihoods opportunities will be introduced, local people’s income will be increased.
    • Mangroves root system will stabilize the coastline by reducing erosion caused by storm surges, currents, waves and tides.
    • Mangroves provide nursery habitat for many commercial fish and shellfish, and thus contribute to the local abundance of seafood.
    • Biodiversity will be enriched as mangroves provide shelter to a range of wildlife species including birds, deer, honey bees, monkey etc.
    • Mangroves serve as nesting areas for coastal birds. Many birds depend on mangroves for part
  • of their seasonal migrations. Even dead mangroves play an important role, providing roosting
  • areas for bird species.
    • More carbon will be sequestered in the end.
