Project Report | Feb 11, 2021
Mangrove plantation has been started

By Md. Maksudur Rahman | Project Leader

Mangrove restoration is one of the prime initiative of BEDS (Bangladesh Environment and Development Society)! BEDS has been planting and regenerating mangrove together with local people since 2013. We have been trying to create a mangrove buffer zone for coastal protection and ensuring sustainable livelihoods in terms of climate change adaptation and mitigation.

BEDS is now executing mangrove plantation plan with coastal communities in Sundarbans coastal region. We had a plan to plant 20,000 mangrove saplings at Paschim Dhangmari village of Banishanta union under Dacope sub district in Khulna district of Bangladesh. We have inaugurated the mangrove plantation activity on 10th February 2021. We have planted 500 mangroves in one pond with the spontaneous participation of the local communities. Latitude of the pond in four corners are, east: 22.440207, west: 22.440105, north: 22.44034, south: 22.439999. Longitude of the pond in four corners are, east: 89.560501, west: 89.55971, north: 89.559708, south: 89.560414. Other 19,500 mangrove saplings will be planted within this month by the local communities. 90 people participated in the plantation activity. A festive atmosphere was created during mangrove plantation activities. We discussed with the local community about the importance of planting mangroves. They committed that they will always work to make green belt and mangrove conservation and they will take care of the planted mangrove saplings by themselves. They said that they want to make a healthy planet for their future generation by mangrove regeneration and conservation. The local people will plant other 19,500 mangrove saplings in the 19 selected ponds within month. 20 ponds owners and their families will take care (watering, weeding) of the planted saplings in their pond. BEDS staff will monitor the plantation activity and will keep record (number of alive plants, height, and leaf number) of the planted sapling using monitoring format 15 days intervals. Local community already has taken initiative for long term protection of the planted mangroves. We hope that more and more local people will be engaged in the mangrove plantation and protection activities and we will be able to create green belt in the Sundarbans coastal region with the active participation of the local communities.

We are extremely grateful to our donors for their contribution and faith for us. We are thereby requesting all our donors to start monthly recurring donations, if you want to help us continuously. It will be of immense help for us.
