Mangrove Conservation & Restoration in Bangladesh

Mangroves are of tremendous importance in respect of protecting the environment protection and providing livelihood support to the coastal people. Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) has been conducting community based mangrove plantation and restoration activities in the Sundarbans coastal region of Bangladesh since 2013.

BEDS is now in preparatory stage of planting 20,000 mangroves in Banishanta union. We have a plan to plant that mangrove inside 20 shrimp farms and one single plot. We have already received approval from all the 20 pond owners and the single plot. So, we are now planning to make fence to protect the mangroves that we are going to plant. Yesterday, we have discussed with few villagers and they praised our initiative and assured to assist in mangrove plantation and protection activity. Local government representatives have also been negotiated and positive concern was been given by them. In the beginning of this week, we negotiated with the nursery owners to figure out the strong saplings for our plantation. So, the nursery owners are now separating the good quality saplings. May be we will be able to start our plantation activity by the end of 1st week February 2021 or in the beginning of the second week. We believe that we will be able to create a mangrove buffer zone in the Sundarbans coastal area of Bangladesh.
