Discussion with the nursery woners
Mangroves are of great value regarding environmental protection. Mangroves play a tremendous role in storing carbon from the environment and stabilize the environment.
Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) has been conducting community based mangrove plantation and restoration activities since 2013. Currently, BEDS is trying to raise fund to restore mangroves in the Sundarbans periphery of Bangladesh.
BEDS is now planning to plant 20,000 mangroves in Banishanta union in this month (January 2021). To do so, we are negotiating with the nursery owners about purchasing of mangrove saplings. We are also discussing with the local villagers on selecting suitable lands. We have already informed the local government representatives about our plan. The local government representatives have provided their positive concern regarding planting 20,000 mangroves. They also assured us that they will be present in the inauguration ceremony of our mangrove plantation activity. After completing the land selection process, we will do the fencing of the selected land so that cattle may not enter into it. Everything is going according to our plan. We hope that we will be able to contribute for environmental conservation and coastal protection.
We would like to thank our donors for their contribution for us so far. We want to request all our donors that if you want to help us continuously, please start monthly recurring donations. It will be really helpful for us.

Mangrove plantation by local community
Mangroves are of immense importance as far as environmental protection is concerned. Mangroves play a significant role to store the ever increasing carbon from the environment and stabilize the environment.
Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) has been conducting community based mangrove plantation and restoration activities since 2013. Currently, BEDS is trying to raise fund from GlobalGiving platform to restore mangroves in the Sundarbans periphery. On December 27 and 28, 2020; BEDS has planted 2000 mangroves at Banishanta union under Dacope sub district of Khulna district of Bangladesh. Before plantation, we prepared the land and put stick on each whole to balance the saplings with the help of local community. We purchased the saplings from the nurseries that BEDS has been assisted to establish. On 27th December morning, BEDS staffs provided motivational speech to the participants (students, women and men) on the importance of mangrove and how to plant the mangroves. Then with the active participation of local community, we have planted 1000 mangroves. On 28th December 2020 we planted 1000 more mangroves on the selected land. We fenced the area to protect the planted saplings from cattle. After the plantation, we requested the participants to take care of the mangroves they planted.
We would like to thank our donors for their contribution for us so far. We want to request all our donors that if you want to help us continuously, please start monthly recurring donations.

Mangrove Restoration for Coastal Protection
By Saumitro Chakrabarti | Project Contributor
Mangroves have great importance regarding environmental protection. It is one of the greatest natural assets of the world. Mangroves contribute a lot to store the ever increasing carbon from the environment.
BEDS (Bangladesh Environment and Development Society) has been conducting community based mangrove plantation and restoration activities since 2013. Currently, the organization is raising fund from GlobalGiving platform to restore mangroves in the Sundarbans periphery. Target grant of the proposed project is 100,000 $ and so far, 1,902 $ is raised from 129 donations.
We have a plan to plant 2000 mangroves in about 30 decimal land of the Sundarbans coastal region (Banishanta union under Dacope sub district of Khulna district in Bangladesh) on 27th December 2020. To do so, we have prepared our proposed land. We made hole for saplings and put one stick for each plant to give balance to the saplings. We have fenced around the selected place to protect the mangroves from cattle. We chose to plant Sonneratia apetala, Heritiera fomes, Bruguiera gymnorhiza and Nipa fruiticans in the site. BEDS has been assisting 5 coastal women to make mangrove nurseries. We have ordered mangrove saplings. So, we will plant those species based on soil condition. As COVID-19 is going on, we will maintain social distancing while mobilizing the local villagers and distribute masks among them.
We would like to thank our donors for being so kind to us. We believe that all our donors will continue to stand beside us for the protection of nature and saving the coastal lives.
