Riverbank Erosion in the Sundarbans coastal region
Value of mangroves cannot be described in words regarding environmental protection and livelihood improvement. Mangroves also play a crucial part to store carbon from the environment.
Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS); a nonprofit, non political and development organization has been conducting community based mangrove plantation and restoration activities since 2013. Currently, BEDS is trying to raise fund to restore mangroves in the Sundarbans periphery of Bangladesh.
BEDS is now in preparatory stage of planting 20,000 mangroves at Purbo Dhangmari village of Banishanta union. Our discussion with the nursery owners went successful and they agreed to provide us the mangrove saplings in a standard price. We have discussed with the local villagers on selecting suitable lands. Finally, we came to the decision that integrated mangrove aquaculture ponds beside the Dhangmari river are the most suitable area for mangrove plantation. Now we are negotiating with the pond owners to get their concern and approval of planting mangroves inside their ponds. We have already got positive response from 10 pond owners to plant the mangroves in their ponds. We would like permission from at least 20 pond owners. After getting their approval, we will start land preparation and other preparatory works. We have already informed the local government representatives about our plan of mangrove plantation and got their positive response. We hope that our activities will also contribute to prevent riverbank erosion.
We would like to thank our donors for their contribution for us so far. We want to request all our donors that if you want to help us continuously, please start monthly recurring donations. It will be really helpful for us.

We are also discussing with the local villagers on selecting suitable lands. We have already informed the local government representatives about our plan. The local government representatives have provided their positive concern regarding planting 20,000 mangroves. They also assured us that they will be present in the inauguration ceremony of our mangrove plantation activity. After completing the land selection process, we will do the fencing of the selected land so that cattle may not enter into it. Everything is going according to our plan. We hope that we will be able to contribute for environmental conservation and coastal protection.

Mangrove plantation by local community
Mangroves are of immense importance as far as environmental protection is concerned. Mangroves play a significant role to store the ever increasing carbon from the environment and stabilize the environment.
Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) has been conducting community based mangrove plantation and restoration activities since 2013. Currently, BEDS is trying to raise fund from GlobalGiving platform to restore mangroves in the Sundarbans periphery. On December 27 and 28, 2020; BEDS has planted 2000 mangroves at Banishanta union under Dacope sub district of Khulna district of Bangladesh. Before plantation, we prepared the land and put stick on each whole to balance the saplings with the help of local community. We purchased the saplings from the nurseries that BEDS has been assisted to establish. On 27th December morning, BEDS staffs provided motivational speech to the participants (students, women and men) on the importance of mangrove and how to plant the mangroves. Then with the active participation of local community, we have planted 1000 mangroves. On 28th December 2020 we planted 1000 more mangroves on the selected land. We fenced the area to protect the planted saplings from cattle. After the plantation, we requested the participants to take care of the mangroves they planted.
We would like to thank our donors for their contribution for us so far. We want to request all our donors that if you want to help us continuously, please start monthly recurring donations.
