Summary

Jakarta has a major waste management problem. This has profoundly negative impacts not only for local communities but for the Planet. To address this, the KDM Green Project is actively working towards locally-driven solutions in Jakarta. The Project helps in two ways: by providing a reliable local waste collection service for recyclables and by educating local communities on the importance of waste reduction. The Project also provides meaningful employment to local under-served youth.

Challenge

Despite showing tremendous promise in helping to reduce waste in Jakarta, the KDM Green Project has struggled to sustain and scale its business for a simple reason: the increasingly high cost of renting, rather than owning, their own recycling truck. While the team has worked hard to increase its client base and monthly revenue, the high cost of renting a truck remains a significant drag on this very beneficial community enterprise - even compromising the stable sustained income for the 3 staff.

Solution

A proposed solution to this clear challenge is to purchase a permanent truck for the collection and sale of recyclable materials. This would yield several direct benefits. By removing the key operational cost of truck rental (i.e., IDR 3,000,000 or around USD $210 per month) the KDM Green Project will be able to maintain and expand their outreach and collection activities. Importantly, they will also be able to provide a consistent minimum monthly salary for the staff's livelihood.

Long-Term Impact

1. This project will provide much-needed local educational outreach programs throughout Jakarta by building awareness and helping communities to reduce their waste in line with the 5R's Principles of Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot. 2. The creation of meaningful roles and career/personal development opportunities for former students of the KDM Foundation (Yayasan KDM) a Center for Street Children. 3. Actively contribute to the protection and restoration of the local environment.
