Summary

Our Marine Conservation Project was founded in August 2013 and is located in the fishing village of Kizimkazi Dimbani, on the island of Zanzibar. The primary focus is to support and create educational, community and research projects that contribute to the preservation of marine habitats in the Menai Bay Conservation Area. We are achieving this through conducting research, ethical dolphin tour workshops and conservation clubs for local schools.

Challenge

Dolphin tourism is booming in Zanzibar, however there are no regulations to protect the dolphin species resident in the area. This means there can be an unlimited number of tourist boats chasing dolphins, driven by untrained boat drivers simply trying to earn a living. Each day we monitor these interactions and collect data to help develop sustainable practices to protect the dolphins, whilst supporting the livelihoods of the local community.

Solution

Ethical Dolphin Tour Workshops - We run free workshops with the local boat drivers to teach them how to make their dolphin tours sustainable & ethical through better driving, information about dolphins, and customer service skills. We run our conservation Club every week after-school with students from the local school. At the end of each term, we take them on a field trip to put their learning into practice, and inspire them to make a difference.

Long-Term Impact

The dolphin, coral reef and fishing activity research collected on project, along with community education, will help to aid in marine conservation and sustainable ecotourism so that the entire Zanzibar environment benefits. To ensure the sustainability and longevity of the African Impact Foundation during COVID-19, donations made via this page as of April 10, 2020, will be used to support all of our projects and operations across Southern and Eastern Africa.
