This project offers training to community members in an effort to empower them with the skills to create their own sustainable income. Training is offered for the following skills: Welding, Baking, Gardening, Entrepreneurship and Sewing. We are also hoping to start offering cooking classes and computer skills training. Jobs are scarce, especially in the rural area we work in (Roodeplaat, Gauteng, South Africa) and many community members lack any marketable skills.
In the current economic climate in South Africa jobs are scarce. In the rural area where we are working that is especially true. We have 3 informal settlements within our community (6000+ people) and many community members lack the proper schooling and skills to either get a job or create their own. Our community members also do not have access to computers or have the skills to use them. This also excludes them from many job opportunities and prohibits them from utilising online resources.
We offer training to empower community members with marketable skills that they can use to create their own income or increase their hireability. The skills training we offer includes: welding, sewing, baking, gardening and entrepreneurship training. In addition, we hope to add cooking classes and computer training which will be very valuable as computer literacy is paramount in today's job market. We will also open up resources like online training and job search engines to the community.
This project will empower community members with marketable skills to earn a sustainable income, thereby supporting not only themselves but their families as well. Increased employment in the community will increase community morale, which is low due to poverty and unemployment. Empowering community members with skills allows them to take control over their lives when to them it often seems like they have none.
