Summary

Healthcare professionals are our essential defense on the front lines against deadly infectious diseases such as COVID 19, and they are operating under tremendous strain to provide quality care to a surging number of patients. We aim to protect them from the harmful effects of chronic stress in these trying times by giving them skills to better manage stress and difficult emotions, strengthen their interpersonal relationships, cultivate emotional resilience and improve their mental well-being.

Challenge

As the cases of COVID 19 rise, so does the rate of chronic stress and burnout for healthcare providers. Conditions in Mexico are particularly difficult where healthcare services are frequently underfunded, material and human resources scarce and hospitals overcrowded. The continued strain on the professionals who keep us safe has taken a toll on their mental health, which has a damaging impact on the quality of care they are able to provide. As they take care of us, who is taking care of them?

Solution

Using the proven ABCD framework (Attention, Kindness, Clarity and Direction) developed by AtentaMente, our workshops will equip over 1,000 healthcare providers throughout Mexico before the end of 2020. By facilitating scientifically validated strategies to effectively combat chronic stress and burnout, participants will be empowered to protect themselves and rely on each other to replenish the emotional resources they need to be at their very best in these times of crisis and overload.

Long-Term Impact

We have delivered an initial pilot program free of cost that reached 2,500 healthcare professionals. 97% of participants reported that they felt the program helped them to better manage the COVID 19 crisis, and 94% reported that their attention to patients increased and stress levels decreased. Our online delivery of this program enables us to reach thousands of healthcare providers over time, so the only limitation to protecting the well-being of those who protect us is funding.
