Challenge

Due to the economic situation in Zimbabwe and preferences to educate boys over girls, girls face pressure to drop out of school. Some girls in disadvantaged communities face prostitution, becoming under-age brides, teen pregnancies, etc. Finances rather than exam results determine whether girls further their education. At local universities, lack of accommodation mean girls are prone to being recruited into prostitution rings or becoming second wives to much older, financially well-off men.

Solution

Girl Child Mentorship gives hope through mentorship sessions run by past Makomborero girls who are from the same communities. Science Lab promotes girls' education by exposing them to hands on experiments in the Science subjects. A-Level scholarships are awarded to disadvantaged girls so they do not stop their education at O-Level. The University Grant Scholarship supports young ladies through their education by providing them with grants to local universities, accommodation and stipends.

Long-Term Impact

Mentor at least 30 disadvantaged girls a year aged 13-15 Address the gender imbalance in Science subjects by allowing at least 20 girls per year to have experience in our Mobile Science Lab See more girls make it to A-Level by awarding our A-Level Scholarship to at least 8 girls a year Provide opportunity for girls to study at university with all basic needs provided through our University Grant Scheme Make girls and young ladies aware of their rights through our Safeguarding training
