Our Mentees
Our Mentees

“I have never thought that spending time with a mentor can be both educational, fun, exciting and great.”: one of the mentees said while talking to other mentees. When this mentee got registered in our organization the first thing she said during a conversation about their expectations of the project was that in all the organizations it would be difficult to have fun and learn something at the same time.

During these three months we planned to realize 90 individual meetings, instead we realized 104 individual meetings. Every week the 11 pairs met and set different short-term and long-term goals to solve an issue and to overcome a problem that mentees face. Every month a mentor-mentee work together on a topic chosen by them and they prepare a power-point presentation to present for other mentor-mentee pairs.

There were also mentor-mentee pairs that even met twice or three times in a week. This speaks to the fact that they enjoy their time together and want to do more. Each mentee took part in 9-10 individual meetings.

“You know, Tuesdays are my favorite days of the week. On that day I meet with my mentor.”: a mentee said during our evaluation.  This mentee has no one in this country, her only dream is to find her father and live with him the rest of her life.

Based on evaluations we can say that Nor Luyce is the only program in Gyumri, Armenia that provides every mentee with an individual ‘care-taker’, a close person who is more than a mentor, who is always there to listen to them and give a supporting hand.

Mentees take part not only in individual meetings but also in different group meetings, that help them to become better educated, more involved in team work. During these three months the mentees took part in the following group meetings: “Fears and how to overcome them”, “I want to change the world”, and “The magical world of emotions”. For each mentee we spend $250 per month.

Along with the mentoring meetings 15 more girls took part in skill building trainings.

“Both my classmate and my teacher were surprised when I started to explain to them how to write a course paper on a certain topic. And these skills I acquired here in this great center”: this is what one of our mentees said.

These 15 mentees have learnt not only how to write a course paper, but also how to search for information in the internet, how to prepare for an interview, how to write a letter or fill out an application form, what are secretary skills, etc. We have also organized computer skills classes, like Microsoft Office and Paint, power-point and budgeting. We help them to build skills for their future careers. In total the mentees took part in 22 hours of group meetings in these two months. We spent $150 for each mentee per month.

During these three months the number of mentees taking tutoring classes grew. Now there are 6 mentees taking the Armenian language class and three mentees taking English language classes. Some of those mentees are going to enter a university this year, the others are graduating from high school. One of our mentees got 18 points out of 20 on her English language test. Another girl got excellent on her Armenian language test. The other mentees raised their points from 7 to 11 out of 20 on the English language test. Mentees have taken part in 30 hours of English language class and 40 hours of Armenian language class. To help our mentees to study better we spend $180 per month per mentee.

Nor Luyce provides mentees with role models and a solid foundation to become successful young women.
