Summary

This project will provide weekly food parcels to 500 families living in the deeply impoverished shantytown of Missionvale, South Africa for 6 months. People infected with the HIV virus years ago are now becoming gravely ill and are dying. One consequence is orphaned children managing entire households. These food parcels will provide relief from hunger, and also provide essential nutrition to mothers infected with the virus so they are able to take their medication effectively.

Challenge

Missionvale Care Centre has a holistic approach to treating, alleviating, and most importantly preventing HIV and Aids. Our programmes include education, counselling, skills development and medical support, but this is of no value without nutrition. One cannot teach a hungry child. Adults cannot take their medication without food. The families that will benefit from food are the poorest of the poor, and are too old, or too ill to work or are children orphaned as a result of HIV.

Solution

We distribute food parcels on a weekly basis to the families most urgently in need. The food parcels are either collected from the Centre, or delivered to the homes if they are too weak or frail. Through basic nutrition we have seen a huge improvement in the general health of patients adopted onto this programme. We believe in meeting a person at the point of their need; once a child is nourished, there is opportunity for further development through skills training and education.

Long-Term Impact

Because our approach is holistic, and has a large educational component attached to it, we believe that an HIV free generation CAN be achieved. Our current beneficiaries will not survive without this nutrition. The many Aids orphans running households by themselves need food to survive, but also need skills and education to pave their way out of the cycle of poverty. Our programmes are focused on providing SUSTAINABLE solutions. Food is just the beginning!
