We hope that you are enjoying the world around you in spite of the obstacles that are there to make each of us stronger and perhaps accountable to overcoming for others and ourselves.

Imani House is a small grassroots organization that believes in the strengths of our communities through self-help, motivation, determination and action. Since 1985 we’ve been working to develop local leadership toward resolving many of the problems that developing countries experience. Literacy, both functional and academic are primary to our efforts.

The Imani House “Liberian Womens’s Health Manual a 63 page publich education project guide was finished a few months ago and training of grassroots village women as instructors was completed last week. We are piloting the manual in four locations presently including daily at our Clinic site where waiting patients come by 7:30am to be first in line for treatment, which begins at 9. The three other locations are within our special summer session literacy classes. Receptiveness is so far great and beyond expectation.

The Public Education Manual created by Imani House and Proliteracy touches on the topics of Health, Sanitation, Nutrition and Human Rights. All areas of weakness in our developing communities. Weaknesses that lead to the reduced life expectancy of Liberians who die 25 years younger than do the average American. Life is most precious but its value is enhanced through an improved quality of life which is the objective of this public education project.

Donate a Latrine: With our campaign we realize that many communities don’t have latrines.   What use if we teach people that human waste is dangerous when they have no latrine to deposit this waste. How’d you like a latrine named after you :+))!?  Well if not, you can still be a part of adding years and quality to many Liberian lives through a donation to our Latrine project.

New Palava Hut: Thanks to donations from people like you, IHI was able to remove our 25 year old termite infested rotting Palava Hut roof and replace it with a high quality coated zinc roof. This gazebo like facility is an integral part of community life in Liberia. IHI’s serves as a meeting place for any community group, for international visiting groups, as a training facility, as a dental space during the war and for community holiday events and celebrations.

Coming Soon Vocational Training Project: Thanks to GlobalGiving donations IHI was able to renovate our old clinic site and open a triage center to isolate people suspected of carrying the deadly Ebola virus. When Ebola was no longer a threat, IHI further renovated this site and our plan is to create a vocational training center for young Liberian women and men as well as to create a small library for the surrounding area. You can also DONATE toward this important project.

Imani House objectives continue to be giving a hand up and the skills, information and when possible opportunity. All of our leadership and support staff are Liberian, some trained by us. We could not be prouder of our efforts and hope you will continue to support us. Imani House would like to thank you for your continued support and generosity! Your donations have allowed us to continue our important health and education programs. 

Imani House Maternal and Child Healthcare Clinic: As the rainy season approaches Liberia, IHI is preparing to meet the challenges of serving twice as many patients, especially small children, who are most susceptible to pneumonia, high fevers and death. From May to October, the healthcare system is overwhelmed with cases of Respiratory Illness and Malaria, caused by an increase in standing water from the rains. Since 2015, our clinic has seen a dramatic increase in patients, which requires additional stores of medicines and an increase in staff.  

The “Liberian Women’s Health Manual” will be released in the coming weeks. It will be used to provide health education to 500 women and girls in remote areas with an emphasis on health, sanitation, nutrition and human rights. This program created by IHI, in collaboration with Proliteracy, is intended to improve literacy, awareness and to better prepare families to respond to their needs. Additionally, this program is raising funds in order to install at least five wells and ten latrines in the focus areas.

Adult Literacy: We will be hosting a graduation ceremony and closing program for our successful students in the coming months. Over 56% of Liberians are non-literate. Currently, 150 women are registered in our programs at three sites. Our goal is to expand our literacy programs in order to increase the literacy rates and improve opportunities for development so that students and their families are able to rebuild and further advance within the Liberian society. 

*NEW* Vocational Center Completed: The newly completed IHI Vocational Center building is ready for use. As funds become available, we expect to bring classes in tailoring and marketable crafts. Also, renovations are being made to the IHI Palava Hut that is adjacent to the clinic. Palava Huts in the area are significant and are typically used for community meetings, congregations and church services. 

Wish List 2017-2018: Additional funding will allow us to:

• Hire additional clinical staff
• Expand literacy programs
• Acquire a four wheel drive vehicle in order to bring healthcare to remote areas during the rainy season
• Install at least five wells and ten latrines in locations where we provide health and sanitation education
