The Story of Hope

By SGDD-ASAM | Project Leader

When Ayse was 9 years old, she was buried under rubble in a major earthquake. Her little brother was with her during the quake and they waited together for two days to be rescued.  At that time, they were living in the same house with their grandmother, but they didn't hear their grandmother's voice at all. Their parents were out of town and as soon as they heard the news about the earthquake, they came back immediately.

The first night spent under the rubble was quite difficult for Ayse. She expressed that her love and understanding for her family had grown stronger after the earthquake. Her grandmother was running to join them at the moment of the quake when the building collapsed. Her sibling cried and became angry frequently due to the trauma he experienced after the earthquake.

Since her mother was a literature teacher, her love for books began at a young age. To comfort her sibling, she told him the fairy tales she remembered. However, she was just as scared as her sibling.

After the earthquake, Ayse and her family entered the recovery process by participating in the psychological support sessions provided by the Association for Social Development and Aid Mobilization (ASAM). Her sibling made significant progress in speaking during this process. Her father went through an emotionally difficult period, but thanks to the support they received, both he and her mother were able to recover quickly.

At the end of this challenging period, Ayse expressed her gratitude to everyone who had helped them and said that she dreamed of becoming a humanitarian worker who inspires hope and solidarity in people when she grows up.
