In Hatay—one of the cities deeply affected by the earthquake—10-year-old Alime and her family, like thousands of others, are struggling to rebuild their lives. A Turkish-born child of Syrian parents, Alime was placed in a container city alongside her family after the disaster. Despite the immense losses she has experienced, today, she smiles with renewed hope.
Alime first encountered the Association for Social Development and Aid Mobilization (ASAM) during support efforts within the container city. The food aid was delivered to her family during the early stages of the earthquakes, and this aid played a crucial role in meeting the basic needs of her siblings.
Over time, this container city became not just a place where Alime’s needs were met, but also a safe space where one could dream big. She began regularly attending ASAM’s Child and Adolescent Friendly Learning space in Hatay after school, where she studies with her friends and participates in both social and artistic activities.
“I love marbling. I love my teachers, too. This place is like home to me; I feel so good. My family is supportive, too; they see that I’m happy when I go home…,” Alime stated.
Through psychosocial support, access to education, and social cohesion activities for children, ASAM continues to rebuild the well-being of children affected by these devastating disasters. Alime’s story demonstrates once again that solidarity and a new beginning, with a bit of hope, are possible in the face of adversity.
