Despite the fear of the coronavirus, people in rural Nepal have been living almost a normal life for the last few months. But as the virus started to spread faster again in India, Nepalese people are now alarmed, especially along the border side. We will have to take extra caution to avoid contamination because the border is only a few kilometres away and it is not well managed. Some far-western districts that are linked with the border have restricted people’s movement and advised them to close some businesses.
The Covid-19 vaccine has arrived in Nepal and slowly reaching people at greater risk and, to the key workers. But, people in rural Nepal are very sceptical about the vaccine because some people have a severe reaction after the vaccination.
In respect to food supplies to the poorest in rural villages- the situation has improved because the two main crops (Rice and Wheat) have been harvested. But, most businesses are still struggling to repay their debts and their future is also uncertain so it is very unlikely that they will recall all the employees.
The coronavirus pandemic has changed the way of life in Nepal and beyond. So the newer type of job opportunities that are suitable in the current circumstances must be explored. A newer way to manage the businesses also has to be adopted and for that various type of training and development will be required. Some financial support to the most struggling local businesses is crucial to keep the local economy going forward.
Currently, we have a helpdesk running at the project location to provide updated information related to the corona virus to the local peoples. We are also providing a soap bar to our girls in the scheme and to those who could not afford it.
We wish a very happy Holi (the festival of colour) to everyone around the globe. May this Holi brings many colourful moments to everyone’s life
