The Slaughterhouse Cats
By Gudrun Olaya | Project Leader

Dear donor and friend! It´s not a nice place to live, but our feral cats have no choice. The local slaughterhouse provides them protection from the elements, and food. The health veterinarian, who also is our hired vet to perform the surgeries of our spay/ neuter project, feeds and allows them to hide there, in order to facilitate the following steps. This sub-project is called CES (CSR for Capture - Sterilization - Release). Which means, that we capture the adults in special cat traps, and after being spayed/neutered, they are relocated to their familiar place. Thus, the number of the colony is limited to a manageable population. Kittens stay at the vet’s, where they get used to human contact, while we find foster or forever homes. Adopters sign a document, committing to sterilization, as soon as the kittens reach the age of five to six months. This is how we break the cycle of unwanted reproductions, thanks to your generous contributions!!!

Cuteness Overload

Dear donor and friend, it’s strange, but homeless cats love schools. Somehow they feel safe on the roofs, on the ground they find enough hiding places, and the kids share their sandwiches with the bravest. Well, Gala is one of them, a sweet young ginger cat, abandoned when she got pregnant at only six or seven months. Her new home was a school with hundreds of children and she knew she had to explore the surroundings well, in order to find a quiet place to give birth. And she did!! A nice and warm room, used by the teachers to store materials for handicrafts and disguises. She jumped into a closet full of fabrics and made her nest. Everyone was amazed, but there was one problem. Vacation would start soon, so who’d feed the cat? One phone call changed her life, and we found a nice and safe foster home for Gala and her tiny three copies. She is a fierce mom, protecting and embracing her kittens all the time. Hopefully, she’ll learn to trust humans during the time of maternity, so that she can be neutered and find a forever home. Her little kittens certainly will!!!

Supporting the local Secretary of Environment

Dear donor and friend, lately we received a call from the local Secretary of Environment and Agricultural Affairs, asking for help. Their waiting list for dogs and cats to be spayed/neutered, has grown far too long, and the females were in danger of getting into heat, subsequently getting lost and becoming pregnant. Most of those domestic animals have been rescued and adopted by humble people, who don’t have the financial resources to consult a particular vet for sterilization. The Secretary offered the supplements, such as anesthesia, suture and syringes, and so we asked our proven vet to program the surgeries, as long as the material last, and at a benevolent price, cheaper than our usual agreement. And we all made it a successful event, spaying/neutering 26 canines and 22 felines!! Soon we’ll reach our goal of 600, and then we’re heading towards the magic number of 700 sterilized (former) strays. With your contribution, nothing is impossible and we are so grateful to count on you. Bless you.
