Summary

This project will build an elementary school (from 1st to 8th grade) in Veron, an underserved community in eastern Dominican Republic, for the benefit of 320 needy children. The community will be greatly impacted given the overcrowding that exists in local public schools. We are planning to build an 8-classroom building (including a computer lab), basketball and volleyball courts, a cafeteria, staff offices, a school yard, a small guard house, a parking lot area and space for future expansion.

Challenge

There is a lack of classrooms in the Veron community that has caused an overcrowding of 30 extra students per classroom in local public schools, plus the nearly 1,000 children without access to education, according to surveys made by our foundation. The educational budget of the government is not enough to build new schools or expand the existing ones. Given the situation, Dominican NGOs are applying their efforts to help solve this problem. The new school will benefit 320 needy children.

Solution

The school will offer children a secure place with a high quality education, a motivating learning environment, the teaching of human values, the creation of a network of related families, a respect for diversity, a focus on ecologically-friendly values, opportunities for children to develop their talents and keep them away from the streets while their parents are working. The school also will provide sporting facilities to promote a healthy and active life.

Long-Term Impact

The project will educate 320 needy children, allowing them to improve their life conditions and to have a better future.
