Challenge

The floods hit northern Nigeria's Borno State after a deluge of rain caused a dam to burst. The same dam burst 30 years ago, causing widespread devastation. Entire neighborhoods in the state's capital, Maiduguri, are submerged under water. The dam collapse is compounding the humanitarian crisis in Borno, which has existed for decades as a result of the Boko Haram insurgency. Affected Nigerians are bracing themselves for a long wait for help, including medical assistance for the injured.

Solution

All donations to this fund will support recovery and relief efforts for people impacted by flooding across Nigeria. Initially, funding will help first responders meet survivors' immediate needs for food, fuel, clean water, hygiene products, and shelter. The fund will then transition to support longer-term recovery efforts run primarily by local, vetted organizations in affected regions across Nigeria.

How Your Donation Will Be Used

When you donate to GlobalGiving's Nigeria Flood Relief Fund, your donation will provide:

  • Food, water, and shelter
  • Medical and psychosocial support
  • Economic assistance
  • Long-term support for resilience and rebuilding efforts
  • And more

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
