An update on your donation to the Nigeria Flood Relief Fund

By Victoria Mendez | Associate, Disaster Response

Thank you—we cannot express enough gratitude for the support shown in the aftermath of the devastating 2022 floods in Nigeria. Tragically, more than 600 people were killed and millions were displaced. The flooding exacerbated the already challenging situation of soaring inflation and increasing risk of hunger in the flood-affected areas of the country.

Thanks to your generous support of the Nigeria Flood Relief Fund, GlobalGiving was able to provide flexible grants to three vetted organizations based in Nigeria on the front lines of flood response. Here is a snapshot of some of the work your donation supported:

  • Riders for Health Nigeria provided essential medical aid and health education to flood survivors in north central Nigeria. The organization’s staff members use motorcycles to reach hard-to-access and remote areas to set up temporary clinics in camps for displaced communities. Despite ongoing challenges and dire need, the organization remains committed to increasing access to resources in rural and remote areas affected by the floods.

  • The Rural Watch Africa Initiative provided critical assistance to the Ogbaru community impacted by flooding in Anambra state. It distributed resources such as food aid and crops to agricultural communities to help people get through the immediate crisis and lay the foundation for long-term recovery.

  • The Women Inspiration Development Network provided emergency relief to flood survivors in southern Nigeria. It is focused on supporting women and girls who are especially vulnerable in the aftermath of a disaster by providing food, clean water, hygiene kits, and medical assistance. Through its trusted network of local leaders and community groups, it has worked hard to ensure its flood relief efforts are aimed at reaching the most vulnerable community members in flood-affected areas.

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
