Talking of Marathons...

Running a music service is like running a marathon at times … and equally rewarding!

Spring is in the air and Bromley Youth Music Trust is as busy as ever with 770 young people and 184 adults regularly taking part in weekly activities with BYMT across 43 music groups. The core music service BYMT gives to schools is thriving, with around 7,458 children and young people taking part in small group or 1-1 lessons on top of 300+ choirs, bands, orchestras and other large groups being delivered in our local schools.

BYMT’s mission is to offer these activities to all young people, and we can only do this with your support.  Last year we delivered 7,280 free instrumental/vocal lessons and provided free instruments and access to BYMT Ensembles via the BYMT Young Musicians’ Bursary. The need for support is only increasing. Our target for this year is £80,000 to be able to cover these costs. Thank you so much to the BYMT Patrons, Alumni, Families and Global friends who support us.

Two incredible BYMT supporters are Tim and Rodney, who are taking part in the London Marathon on Sunday 26 April this year, with all proceeds going to support our Young Musicians’ Bursary.  The record for the longest marathon playing the tuba by an individual is 24 hours & 8 minutes, achieved by Rodney in the UK from August 16-17 2002. Rodney is a staunch BYMT supporter and parent of current BYMT young musicians. Tim is a BYMT Alumnus & is running the marathon in memory of his Dad, Nicholas Woodall, former BYMT Head of Strings. Tim wants to ensure his daughter and future generations have access to the transformative power of music.

More Highlights for the Spring Term:

  • The BYMT Inspire Band 2026: captivates hundreds of children through a series of exhilarating concerts at the start of the term. These performances are not just musical events - they serve as a platform for former students of BYMT to motivate and encourage the younger generation.
  • BYMT Rotary Trotman & Advanced Singer Final: Thanks once again the Rotary Clubs in Bromley who support us in a range of activities, including the annual instrumental and singing competitions. The standards this year were incredibly high and both competitions were amazing, showcasing the depth of musical talent in Bromley. We wish to congratulate all the finalists. The competition winners, Clarine and Maddie, went on to represent BYMT at the Rotary District Finals and congratulations to Maddie who won this final and will now compete at the Rotary Cluster Final.
  • She’s Got Brass: BYMT’s main hall came to life with the awesome “She’s Got Brass” – performing their unique jazz/street music to an enraptured audience of young musicians, who later in the afternoon got to play side-by-side with these inspirational musicians.
  • BYMT Children’s Concert with BYCO: Off the back of last year’s success, this event sold out in 48 hours. A venture to inspire the next generation of young musicians. The senior students of BYCO performed brilliantly to a packed house of young children alongside their parents/carers. Both the young musicians and BYMT staff helped them have their first go on string instruments.
  • Jazz Open Day: A spectacular day of Jazz workshops & performances. Check out the video of last year’s event on our official YouTube Channel
  • Double Bass Festival: Where else could you find 30+ Double Bass players getting together to workshop & perform a range of specially prepared arrangements? This event shows how versatile this wonderful instrument can be.
  • Bromley Horn Day 2026: Supported by the British Horn Society, BYMT played host to 50+ French Horn player taking part in workshops & performances. This year featuring guest artist Angela Barnes (London Symphony Orchestra) and lead tutor Richard Steggall (Junior Guildhall).
  • BYMT Musical Theatre Company became one of the first music services in England to take on the challenging musical Hadestown in March and it was a huge success: "Please pass on our praise and congratulations to the entire cast. What an amazing production!!"

Music Changes Lives! Together Let’s Change More - Thank you for your support
