Nurture Program Progress Report

Executive Summary

The Nurture Program, implemented by One Billion Lives Foundation, continues to advance holistic community development among highly marginalized populations in Anekal, Bengaluru, including the Hakkipikki and Iruliga tribal groups and migrant waste picker communities. Through an integrated approach focusing on education, healthcare access, and psychosocial well-being, the program has supported over 2,000 individuals with essential services while strengthening children’s learning continuity and community engagement.

A key emphasis has been placed on bridging educational gaps, reintegrating out-of-school children into formal education, and creating safe, engaging learning spaces within the Waste Picker Colony. Complementary activities such as art and craft sessions, sports participation, and community celebrations have significantly improved children’s confidence, social skills, and sense of belonging. Despite challenges such as irregular attendance and initial community resistance, sustained outreach, parent engagement, and consistent program delivery have led to measurable improvements in school re-enrolment, participation, and overall child development. The program continues to demonstrate that sustained, community-centered interventions can foster resilience, empowerment, and long-term positive change.

1. Program Overview

The Nurture Program is designed to uplift marginalized communities by addressing interconnected needs related to education, healthcare, and social well-being. Operating in underserved settlements in Anekal, Bengaluru, the program works closely with tribal communities and migrant waste picker families to improve quality of life through sustained, inclusive support.

The initiative prioritizes access to healthcare services, educational support for children, and structured engagement activities that foster emotional development, creativity, and community participation. A dedicated learning center in the Waste Picker Colony serves as a critical hub for bridging learning gaps and supporting the mainstreaming of children into government schools.

2. Education and Child Development Initiatives

2.1 Learning Center Activities

The learning center continues to provide a structured and nurturing environment for children, particularly those who are school dropouts or irregular attendees. The program introduced art and craft classes to create a joyful and engaging learning atmosphere that encourages consistent participation.

Educators implemented a thoughtfully structured timetable that included:

  • Circle time to build group interaction and communication
  • Art and craft activities to enhance creativity
  • Drawing sessions to improve fine motor skills
  • Storytelling to strengthen language and imagination
  • Interactive games to promote teamwork and engagement

Each session consistently engaged 20–25 children, including several previously out-of-school learners. The approach not only strengthened academic readiness but also improved confidence, peer relationships, and emotional well-being.

2.2 Reintegration of Dropout Children

A major focus of the program has been reconnecting children with formal education through regular follow-ups, counselling, and parental engagement.

Notable outcomes include:

  • Children who had discontinued schooling due to family challenges or peer influence have successfully resumed attending school.
  • Increased regular attendance and participation in classroom and co-curricular activities.
  • Strengthened parental awareness on the importance of continuous education.

These efforts have helped restore learning continuity and reduce dropout risks within the community.

3. Sports and Confidence Building

Children from the program participated in a sports tournament at Ulsoor, proudly representing themselves as the “Power Stars.” Competing against older and more experienced teams, the children displayed resilience, teamwork, and determination.

Despite initial challenges such as inconsistent attendance and community hesitation, sustained facilitation enabled regular engagement in sports. The team received the “Most Spirited Team” recognition, and one participant was awarded “Most Spirited Player,” highlighting the positive impact of structured extracurricular exposure on confidence, discipline, and teamwork.

4. Community Engagement and Celebrations

Community participation remains a cornerstone of the Nurture Program. Independence Day celebrations were organized at the Waste Picker Colony, creating a vibrant and inclusive environment for children and families.

Key activities included:

  • Flag hoisting ceremony and national anthem
  • Cultural performances such as patriotic songs, dances, and skits
  • Active participation of parents and community members

These events fostered a sense of unity, pride, and belonging while strengthening trust between the program team and the community.

5. Healthcare and Holistic Support

The program continues to facilitate access to essential healthcare services for underserved populations, ensuring that over 2,000 individuals regularly benefit from medical support. By integrating healthcare with education and community outreach, the program addresses immediate needs while promoting long-term well-being and self-reliance.

6. Challenges and Adaptive Strategies

The program encountered challenges including:

  • Initial community resistance
  • Irregular attendance among children
  • Limited resources in highly marginalized settings

To address these, the team adopted consistent home visits, parental counselling, flexible engagement strategies, and culturally sensitive outreach. These efforts significantly improved participation and strengthened community ownership of the program.

7. Impact and Outcomes

  • Increased school re-enrolment and regular attendance among previously out-of-school children
  • Improved confidence, creativity, and social interaction among participants
  • Strengthened community engagement and parental involvement
  • Enhanced access to healthcare services for marginalized families
  • Creation of a safe and inclusive learning environment within the settlement

The program has gone beyond academic support to nurture emotional resilience, life skills, and a sense of belonging among children.

8. Conclusion and Way Forward

The Nurture Program continues to demonstrate the effectiveness of an integrated, community-led model in transforming the lives of marginalized children and families. By combining education, healthcare access, creative engagement, and sustained outreach, the initiative is fostering long-term empowerment and sustainable development within vulnerable communities.

Continued support through GlobalGiving enables the program to expand its reach, deepen impact, and ensure that children from underserved backgrounds receive consistent opportunities for learning, growth, and a brighter future.
