The burden of undernutrition stays with someone for life.
Nearly half of all children deaths are related to undernutrition – more than any other cause of mortality. Undernourished children who make it to adolescence are more likely to be stunted – both mentally and physically. They are more likely to have lower education levels and lifetime earnings, as well as increased risks of chronic disease.
Under the Alliance’s health initiative, we are in our second year of our Nurturing Nutrition program. Our goal is to provide nutrition training to all of our 11 primary schools and provide training to our teachers on proper nutrition. This is in the hopes that educating the youth on some of the most basic practices -- such as proper gardening practices and importance of eating a variety of foods-- will create a generation that suffers less from nutrition related illnesses.
But, as with many of our programs, there are more than just the obvious health benefits. Healthier children stay in school longer, attend more regularly, learn more, and become healthier and more productive adults.
School health and nutrition programs are a cost-effective, community based way to change, not just someone’s health, but someone’s future.
Your support will allow us to continue the work we’ve begun in these primary schools, and allow us to expand this program to reach more children.
Thank you for your generosity and your belief in not only us, but our friends in Africa.
Iniche! Merci! Thank you!
