Red Cross Field Actions
In response to this food and nutritional crisis, the French Red Cross, the Chad Red Cross, and the Cameroon Red Cross have implemented a range of concrete humanitarian interventions, including:
Strengthening health and nutrition centers in the most affected areas through the provision of medicines, hygiene kits, and logistical support to improve the treatment of malnourished patients.
Training healthcare staff and community volunteers in early detection of malnutrition and best nutrition practices, enabling families to play an active role in preventive care.
Raising community awareness on balanced diets, exclusive breastfeeding, and the prevention of nutritional deficiencies through support groups and field-based training sessions.
Community-based referral activities to ensure that malnourished children are rapidly directed to appropriate health facilities for care.
Based on these field initiatives, encouraging results are already emerging: improved patient care, increased family involvement in early screening, and a reduction in severe cases when adequate support is provided. These actions combine direct medical care, capacity building, and community mobilization to achieve a lasting impact.
Field Testimonies
In Cameroon, farmers and mothers are sharing powerful testimonies of the tangible impact of Red Cross activities:
In the Far North of Cameroon, Abamet Ali, a farmer, has changed his infant nutrition practices and now raises awareness across his community about the importance of exclusive breastfeeding and balanced nutrition.
In southern areas, Fedama Mangayak, a health center manager, reports a clear improvement in healthcare practices thanks to the training and supplies provided.
Women such as Korgai Adèle and Zaïna Marthe have learned essential agricultural techniques and child health monitoring methods (such as measuring mid-upper arm circumference) that now enable them to take direct action to prevent and treat malnutrition.
These examples demonstrate that a combined approach of training, community-based support, and access to healthcare is delivering meaningful results on the ground.
