YOUTH EMPOWERMENT

By Mary Afolabi | OMLA Project Director

Introducing Suny, a 2024 OMLA Fellow and seasoned social entrepreneur, who has dedicated over seven years to advancing civic initiatives. He is a strong advocate of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, with a particular focus on Goals 3, 4, 8, and 16.

During his OMLA Fellowship, Sunday led a committed team of champions to implement a project called Empowerment for Self-Reliance: Skill Acquisition for Youth in Ago-Ireti Camp https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1pl-aPL3JY .

This project was developed to support the children of elderly individuals living with disabilities in Ago-Ireti Camp, Ondo State, Nigeria by equipping them with vocational skills and essential start-up tools. The initiative aims to promote self-reliance and long-term sustainability, reducing dependency on government aid and external support.

The project have directly empowered 50 youths and indirectly benefited over 200 residents of the camp, ultimately contributing to improved livelihoods and social well-being within the community.

Ten youth were empowered with startup equipment for skills such as barbing, welding, soap and vaseline making, and hairdressing.

  • Tomi and Lekan now have their own welding workshop where they generate income to support their education and their aged parents.
  • Bolu currently runs his own Barbershop and is able to support his aged parents by providing for their basic needs.
  • Nifemi and Hami have been empowered with skills and equipment to run a hairdressing salon. They both operate a hairdressing shop, earning a living and supporting their aged parents financially, instead of turning to immoral activities due to poverty or lack of basic needs.
  • Sunmi started her own soap and vaseline making business, earning income to finance her education, support her family, and contribute to the economy of Ago-Ireti camp.

These young people are not only self-employed but have also become employers of labor and mentors/trainers for other young people in their community.
