Summary

Pakistan has been experiencing a brutal monsoon season and currently more than a third of the country is flooded with 33 million people affected. This outpaces the record setting flood season from 2010 and puts millions of people at risk from lack of access to clean drinking water, food, shelter, and medical care. GlobalMedic is responding to re-establish access to some of these basic resources, including food and clean drinking water, and get help to those most vulnerable.

Challenge

June 2022 marked the beginning of one of the worst monsoon seasons on record in Pakistan. It has led to over 1,340 deaths and 3,550 injuries. 1 in 7 people living in Pakistan have been affected and floods are expected to worsen as heavy rains persist. The WHO has already noted the increased spread of diseases like acute watery diarrhoea, dengue fever, and COVID-19. At least 3.6 million acres of crops and orchards have been impacted by the flooding posing a threat to food security nationwide.

Solution

Access to water, sanitation and hygiene becomes increasingly difficult. Without access to clean drinking water rates of waterborne illness skyrocket. GlobalMedic is working to provide access to clean drinking water at the household and community levels for those affected. We are also providing food support through the provision of hot meals and thousands of grocery hampers. We are continuing to evaluate needs and are adjusting our response to fill emerging gaps.

Long-Term Impact

This project will help families through the emergency and early recovery phases of this disaster. Family Emergency Kits distributed during this project will be able to provide families with a source of clean drinking water for up to one year, protecting their health now and once the immediate danger has subsided. Food support will allow families to allocate resources to other areas of re-building, increasing the timeframe to stabilize their situation.
