First of all we want to thank you for your generous donations that help our PaSch-project to continue and allow us to organize some nice activities for our mentees and mentors.
What happened since our last report? On 21st of March we had a get together with 5 mentors to share experiences and talk about their mentorships. We also wondered and discussed which topics could be interesting for a workshop or an activity.
We learned that some kids want to become a police officer and so we are in contact with the police office in our district to hopefully arrange a meeting, where our mentees can learn about the job and ask questions. We will see if this works out for a few of our mentees, because they have to be at least in fifth grade.
Other subjects were puberty that some of the kids are confronted with by now or start to be confronted with. So our mentors asked themselves how their mentorship might change and how they can be helpful and supportive for their mentees. Another topic were the role models of man and woman that the mentees have and how to talk about different role concepts nowadays than the traditional ones some kids believe in.
Since the last report two more tandems got to know each other. One of them is a special combination, because they are two siblings, a boy and a girl, who were interested in starting a mentorship together and a couple, who also were interested in supporting 2 kids. So now they are 4 of them and for their first meeting they already managed to cook a delicious lasagna all together. The other tandem is a woman and a girl and as you can see on the photo, our mentee is so proud to finally have her own mentor now and not just her brother.
On the first of April, we finally had an excursion again and 20 mentors and mentees visited the so called ATZE Musiktheater, a music theatre for kids. We watched a play called “Rico, Oscar und die Tieferschatten”. It is about two kids, one of them highly gifted and the other the opposite, what he named “low gifted” (tiefbegabt), because there are so many things that always “fall out of his head”. They meet each other and become friends because though they are so different, they have some things in common. It is a detective story and it was really thrilling to see what kids do to help each other. The mentees left the theatre and described it as a very funny, crazy and thrilling play.
Finding volunteers sometimes can be difficult. We still have interested people but some of them don’t fulfill some of our requirements. For example we had some qualified interested volunteers, but unfortunately they will not stay in Berlin. That‘s why we had to decide that they could not participate in a mentorship, since our idea is to bring mentors and mentees together at least for one year or even longer.
So we decided to offer an “InformationCafé” for people who are interested in voluntary work in our community center and projects like PaSch. On 13th of May we opened our Café with coffee and cake and also a mentor with his mentee came by to share experiences of their personal mentorship. It was our first try and only very few people came, but they were interested in doing some voluntary work and also wanted to spread our information with their friends. In May, we also arranged a table with information in our Café so people visiting us can see what possibilities of voluntary work we offer in our community center. We hope to reach some interested people.
On the 16th of May we offered a workshop for 5 new volunteers, which was really successful. We hope to arrange that some of the new mentors and mentees get to know each other during summer.
What are the next steps?
On 19th of May we organize our annual festival for the neighborhood which is organized in community centers all over Europe. We are looking forward to spend a nice afternoon with friends, supporters and neighbors with music, food and shows from groups practicing in our community center.
On 30th of June there will be the next big festival, because we want to celebrate with all our neighbors, friends, guests and companions 30 years of “NachbarschaftsEtage” (our community center). We will definitely tell you more about that in our next report!
Thanks again and all the best wishes from PaSch!
