New Year's report

First of all, PaSch wants to say happy New Year and sends you and your families best wishes for 2018!

Before we tell you how PaSch started in 2018, we would like to share what happened in November and December before Christmas break!

We invited our mentors for a get together on 21st of November, so they could get to know each other, talk about the mentorships and experiences as a mentor. Especially for all the new mentors it is very interesting to exchange their personal experiences, to have the possibility to ask things that are unclear and to get to know other mentors and get some new ideas what they can do with their mentees.

On 1st of December we invited all neighbors and friends and also mentors, mentees and their families for our annual Christmas get together around a bonfire with music and hot drinks. Though it was really cold, there was a very nice atmosphere, the musicians played very nice music and we started all together into Christmas season. 6 PaSch mentors followed our invitation and met with their mentees and some also came with the whole family.

PaSch invited all mentors and mentees to a kid’s theatre as a Christmas field trip on 10th of December. We decided to see a play called “Die Ministerpräsidentin” (the prime minister), where a 12 years old girl turns out to have the possibility to run for the prime minister. The play was about political topics, democracy, right to vote for children, children’s rights and what children think what is important in our society and in political discussions. Children should be encouraged by this play to stand up for their needs and wishes and adults should take kid’s voice more seriously. Not only the kids but also the adults were very impressed by this play. We are happy that 22 mentors and mentees came to join this field trip, which we were able to offer also thanks to your donations!

On the 13th of December one mentor with her mentee among other volunteers of different projects were invited to the popular Christmas market at Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin. Our district wanted to say “thank you” to the committed people for all the hours of volunteer work they spend either to other people or helping in a different manner, for example in a library. As you can see on the picture our mentor and mentee (and two other projects) had the possibility to present on a stage what their volunteer work is about and how they spend time together in their mentorship. Afterwards, we were invited to drinks and food and to share a nice evening among other people that help to make the world a lot better by spending time. We enjoyed the evening and artistic shows on the Christmas market and had a really nice evening together as a last activity in 2017.

January 2018 started with a visit of the police department in our district. We waited months to make it possible and finally on the 11th of January we met – 10 mentees with their mentors or parents and a police officer. He showed us a room, where they brought people to investigate them and also single cells. He also showed us, what kind of equipment police officer might have to wear or carry depending on their police operation. As you can see on the picture, it is a lot to wear and carry and as the officer said, it is also heavy for adults. The kids could ask all their questions and we got an interesting insight into working as a police officer. Afterwards some kids asked me, if we can also visit a fire department next… ;-) Let’s see, if we can make this possible as well.

On the 26th of January, we organized our third Thank-You-Party for volunteers and, this year, also for people working in different offers or courses in our community center (like helping kid’s with homework, offering legal or social advice, leading a yoga class etc.). To honor them and to say thank you, we invited all 160 committed people that work in and support our community center and had a nice evening with improvisational theatre, Syrian food and drinks and also a small activity. We had a really nice evening together and the people supporting our community center got to know each other and enjoyed their evening.

Two days ago, we were able to offer a workshop for four new volunteers again and now we can start matching again and arrange new mentorships. We are looking forward to it and will tell you in detail in our next report.

What is also planned next? We definitely want to organize a circus workshop again. Twice we already had the possibility to arrange a workshop for around 12-16 PaSch mentees and we are happy to allow also new mentees this experience to be an artist and try different circus disciplines.

We also want to offer a workshop for our mentees and mentors with the topic of waste and want to learn how to separate waste properly and also how to recycle waste. The organization offering those workshops also has some brochures with information and questions around waste and recycling, which could be a nice game for our mentorships.

PaSch wants to say thank you for your donations that make it possible to offer our mentees and mentors different activities, experiences and support, when they need it! THANK YOU!
