Dear friends of PaSch,
we hope that you are fine and stay strong and healthy in this still serious situation in the world. After more than a year living and working in these pandemic times, we want to share some impressions of the new normal PaSch-life and some really cute stories about our tandems.
As we mentioned in our last report, we wanted to start new matchings online. In January, we could connect our first two online tandems with our new concept. 5 meetings online to get to know each other, the first three accompanied by our colleagues in the beginning and in the end of the meeting, the fourth meeting is a test without us – just mentor and mentee. And in our last meeting we talk about all our formal documents and regulations and wish them a good time together. Afterwards mentor and mentee (and family) arrange their (online) meetings on their own. The PaSch colleagues still offer support in the background if needed and ask regularly if everything works fine for both sides.
We were all very excited to start online matchings and to see, how our new concept works out. Therefore, we started with some online meeting tests runs to make sure everything works, before we met our families online.
Our first mentee and his mother still needed some translations into Turkish, which our colleague managed perfectly. At this meeting our mentor found ways to even play together online. When they were alone online they showed each other different things in their home that are important to them. They got along very well although a language barriers exist. But already in first two meetings we could see that the mentee started to understand more German again and also tried to talk more German. As we figured, it is just a question of practicing – which he was missing since he didn’t go to School due to lockdown and just talked Turkish with his family and few friends he met.
In some of the following matchings the PaSch colleagues shortened the time they accompanied the meetings, because they felt like “stealing” important time between mentor and mentee. They connected very quickly and just wanted time to talk, play, draw pictures on topics they picked and dream of things that they can do when they finally meet in real life. In a few of the 5 new mentorships so far, we could also shorten the meetings to a total of 3 or 4 meetings, so the tandem had time to start on their own meetings earlier. We all could see how happy the kids were to get to know their new mentor and with every meeting the sympathy and the fun to spend time together grew – even online.
It is such a pleasure to see, how valuable those online meetings between mentors and mentees are and that both sides enjoy the little break of the new normal life of lockdown and homeschooling. So far, most of the tandems met twice a week for about an hour, some even longer or more often and were very creative together. They also spend time together doing homework and mentors supported their mentees in homeschooling, which was a great support also for the parents. Our colleague responsible for the families supported especially our new families but also some “older” families in these hard times. Mostly the topics were the changing regulations concerning the corona rules, homeschooling and the reopening of schools in small groups and with different concepts in different schools, which started in April.
PaSch was able to support at least some of the families with donated technical equipment like laptops or tablets. We also could offer a little introduction for the mentee and mother or father with their new laptop or tablet and showing them how to use the important applications necessary for homeschooling. So in February some families finally received the equipment to be able to take part in online homeschooling. Also some families received laptops or tablets from their schools, which was a great support as well.
In the end of March, we were finally able to organize our first short meeting outside with one of the online tandems. In April the other 4 tandems followed and we were all happy to let mentors and mentees meet each other in real life. We just met for about 15 minutes and then let them go for a walk and get to know each other even better. It was so nice to be with them, when they finally met the first time and see the curiosity and excitement. One mentee and her family brought her mentor and even PaSch colleagues flowers and typical Turkish chocolate as a little gift.
We also used the time to talk again about rules concerning corona situation and to be careful with each other and that the PaSch recommendation is to meet outside.
All tandems that have been together before the pandemic already continued to meet each other regularly also during Lockdown – which was very helpful and good for all of them. We heard that those meetings always felt like a highlight in the week. They were able to think of something else than of the corona situation and feel more joy and lightness. We were also very happy to hear, that most of our mentors told us, that their mentees don’t seem to suffer in this situation. We think that their support as a mentor and being a stable person to the mentees outside their families helps those kids to cope with this difficult situation.
On Mother’s day the PaSch colleagues (both mothers) received a short voice message from one of our new mentees sending us best wishes for mother’s day! We were overwhelmed by this cute short message.
And last but not least: In February 2021 PaSch celebrated its 11th anniversary. Due to the Corona restrictions we weren’t able to organize a party but we published an online pin board with some pictures and a text and everyone connected to PaSch was invited to write something they have in mind thinking of PaSch. Here you can see and read more: https://padlet.com/Pasch_Patenschaften/k63bhguo3qyvevdw
Also one of our local newspaper printed an article of PaSch and their new online format and interviewed one of our new mentors: https://www.morgenpost.de/berliner-helfen/article231667247/Gute-Verbindung-auch-in-Corona-Zeiten.html?fbclid=IwAR0V2IQglZPbMRfplkbVF788OEKU-gRA4-mvFSEoHdDg1bpvmsZ6XdqgtBQ
So after 11 years of PaSch, everything is different and new, but our mentors and mentees are still happy to have the opportunity to get to know each other – even online – and spend time together and learn from each other. We can proudly say, that this is the most important thing for us and we want to continue with this work. Also thanks to your donation, we are able to continue this important project and be there for the families and mentors.
Stay safe and healthy!
