Summary

Eight Kenyan schools have now received a total of 380 bicycles, helmets, safety vests and tool kits. These are on loan to students who otherwise walk 5-6 miles each way to and from school. Attendance, promptness and academic achievement have all improved among participating students. Female students feel safer during their commutes to and from school. The goal for 2024 is to provide two more schools with a total of 120 bicycles and accessories.

Challenge

Too often, students miss classes or are late because of the distance to school. This leads to poor grades, a high rate of high school dropouts and unemployment. Traveling on foot is often dangerous for female students as they are approached by boda boda (motorbike taxi) drivers who in turn ask for sexual favors, increasing chances of teenage pregnancy, dropping out of school and early marriage. As many students are from subsistence farm families, they cannot afford to purchase a bicycle.

Solution

Bicycles provided to high schools by Pedal Power for Kenyan Education are helping with promptness, attendance, and better grades. Female students feel safer traveling by bicycle. Saved time is used for extra studying and helping families on their farms. Scores on national exams have gone up and more students are qualifying to continue their education at a university. Participating students, their parents and school staff recognize the importance of this program.

Long-Term Impact

With access to bicycles, more students are attending school regularly, improving academically and going on to higher education. They will be able to get higher paying jobs and help their families economically. Many of these young people will be the leaders and educators of their community. They will help stop the cycle of poverty.
