Challenge

On February 15, 2022, historical amounts of rain poured down on Petropolis, north of Rio de Janeiro killing more than 75 people and causing mass destruction. Within just weeks of deadly flooding across the country, the number of missing persons across Brazil continues to grow. Thanks to its past disaster responses, GlobalGiving has learned that it is vital to get funds to locally-led nonprofits that can respond to the community needs in both the short and long-term.

Solution

All donations to the Petropolis Brazil Flood Relief Fund will support flood relief and recovery efforts in Brazil. Initially, the fund helps first responders meet survivors' immediate needs for food, fuel, clean water, medicine, and shelter. As needs emerge, we will support longer-term recovery efforts run by local, vetted organizations in the impacted area.

How Your Donation Will Be Used

When you donate to GlobalGiving's Petropolis Brazil Flood Relief Fund, your donation will be used to:

  • Provide food, water, and emergency medical supplies to people
  • Support temporary relief and emergency supplies for displaced families
  • Meet other needs that emerge

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
