Dear Friends,
Greetings from the province of Zamboanga del Norte. It is still too hot here and for several months now there is no sign of rain. Farmers are gettings hungrier every day. In other provinces farmers are blockading the main highway in order to demand food. This reporting period, we visited the town of Sergio Osmena to assess the extent of El Nino problem and the state of farmlands there. It is sad to note that lands are barren and dry and small fires in the mountain-sides can be seen happening. Local residents are desperate and they are cutting the trees left growing to make charcoal in order to sell these for food. We are developing small-scale initiatives like vegetable raising and the raising of small animals like goats and chickens to provide small livelihoods for farmers. We will await for the start of the rainy season for the gardening activity.
Very sincerely yours,
Cora Sayre
