Dr. Majid Khalil, Chairman of the Board of the Bothoor Alkhaer Organization, and I had a wonderful visit this week to the Al-Ahad Nursery School in Diyala. We learned about its mission and its remarkable dedication to its ninety students, who are acquiring essential skills in agriculture and ecosystem management. All students enrolled in the three-year bachelor's degree program pay no tuition fees and enjoy breakfast and lunch daily at the school's excellent cafeteria, located on its eight-hectare campus.
One can sense the dedication of the school's staff and management team, as we all know that the best way to learn is through hands-on experience. Students participate daily in gardening and planting trees and plants, which are grown at the school using local and organic varieties.
The school's buildings embody the use of local materials and traditional knowledge, which, as we know, are highly resilient. The school's management has an ambitious vision for sustainable development, which they strive to achieve daily with the students. They aspire to establish a fruit tree nursery in the future, which will benefit rural communities in their region and potentially beyond.
We learned so much and were truly impressed, but one of the most important takeaways was the school's genuine focus on preparing its graduates for the job market. Participants arrive early each day and study and practice sustainability until late afternoons, five days a week for three years, in a stimulating and beautiful environment, with instructors who are themselves experienced educators.
I would be delighted if graduates of the Horticulture School could become my colleagues at Seeds of Goodness. We eagerly anticipate learning more about how the organization can support this vital educational model.
If you have the opportunity to visit Diyala, perhaps you could enjoy lunch at the school's excellent on-site restaurant, explore its grounds, meet its wonderful staff and students, and be inspired, just as we were on this visit.
