The Real Impacts of Reforestation

By Jess Knierim | Development Associate

The Indo-Burma Peninsula in Southeast Asia is one of the most threatened rainforests in the world. With an original forest habitat encompassing 237,300,000 hectares, only ~5% of the Indo-Burma forest remains today and Cambodia represents almost 20% of this remaining rainforest. Critical to the region, the Southern Cardamoms form Cambodia’s largest intact forest. It is home to 15 Critically Endangered species, is part of one of Asia’s last remaining elephant corridors, and constitutes the most important forest watershed in Cambodia, playing a key role in regulating the entire region’s climate.

Despite the Cardamom Rainforest’s global significance, it is under threat from deforestation. Fortunately, Wildlife Alliance is not only protecting the region from deforestation, we are also offsetting forest loss through reforestation. Here are some of the real impacts your support of our reforestation efforts have had:

Curbing Biodiversity Loss

We are currently experiencing global extinction rates that greatly exceed the long-term average. If the current trends continue, we could see 75% of species become extinct in the next few centuries. One of the major drivers of this extreme biodiversity loss for terrestrial species is deforestation and habitat loss. Reforestation acts as a tool to restore habitats and build corridors between existing habitats, giving threatened species a chance at survival.

Reducing Carbon Dioxide and Fighting Climate Change

Greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane are some of the main drivers of climate change. Fortunately, planting new trees can help to reduce the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. Forest are an effective and natural carbon sink, soaking up much of the carbon emitted from burning fossil fuels. Counteracting global deforestation through reforesting cleared land is key to mitigating climate change.

Stopping Erosion and Protecting Watersheds

Without root systems keeping soil in place, deforestation leads to soil erosion. This affects agriculture, leads to landslides, and amplifies flash floods. Reforestation helps restore water regulating ecosystem services such as attracting rainfall, reviving underground aquifers, supplying surface streams, and creating resilience to droughts and floods.

Thanks to your support, Wildlife Alliance has planted over 1 million trees in the Southern Cardamom Mountain Range. Your donations have helped keep the Cardamom Rainforest Landscape one of Southeast Asia’s largest intact forests.
