As the reforestation season approaches, Pro Eco Azuero seizes a unique opportunity for unprecedented land access. Our goal: plant 20,000 native and fruit trees strategically in our corridor. This creates forest connectivity, safeguards water sources, restores the Azuero spider monkey's habitat, and boosts climate resilience in rural communities. With 500 volunteers ready to assist, we can amplify our impact, fostering environmental stewardship across generations. Your support can make it happen!
Once a large tropical dry forest, today only 7% of the Azuero Peninsula has intact forest; this is in part to massive clearing and more recently climate-change induced drought. Endemic species like the critically endangered Azuero spider monkey subspecies cling to survival in isolated forest patches that are less than half the size of its typical minimum home range.
As part of our collaboration with local farms we designed a strategic reforestation project of an 80 km corridor. This area follows the Oria River basin, crosses 8 counties and 3 districts. We believe that reforesting this corridor together, with an already active community, will empower a sense of ownership and change. We have seen the profound effect on local communities, from children to elders when working to enhance their ecosystem.
This project aims to restore the habitat of the Azuero spider monkey, enhance climate resilience in vulnerable communities, and foster lasting environmental consciousness among residents. By integrating reforestation, conservation, community development, and education, we are pioneering innovative approaches that intertwine our forests, communities, and wildlife.
