Summary

The project shall install a 10kw solar mini grid system that will power an existing borehole and the clinic unit of the Bulu Blind center Buea, in order to ensure uninterrupted access to safe drinking water and better health services to over 40 blind kids of the Center and residents of the community . The electricity generated will also power the poultry farm, arts and guild unit and ICT units of the center, eliminating the high cost of running the center thereby making it self-sustainable.

Challenge

Frequent electricity cuts mean sometimes up to 5 days in a week the center is without electricity. During these power outages, the blind trainees are forced to fetch water from a nearby river which is unsafe & unhealthy. The health center is unable to store vaccines and provide many services while the other units like poultry farm and ICT unit remain under-productive. The solar mini grid will ensure uninterrupted access to safe drinking water and improved health for the kids & entire community

Solution

The 10kw solar mini-grid system will power an existing borehole, poultry farm, health center, arts and guild unit and ICT unit of the blind center. These will serve the water and health needs of not just the blind trainees but the entire Bolifamba community. Uninterrupted supply of power to the poultry farm will boost its productivity while the health center will generate more income from better services offered. All these will combine to make the blind center fully sustainable in the long run.

Long-Term Impact

Over 40 blind kids of the center and close to 1500 inhabitants of Bolifamba will benefit from steady access to safe drinking water and improved health services. Supply of reliable electricity will enable the health center store refrigerated vaccines and provide other services unlike before thereby improving the health of the kids and community residents. Likewise, the poultry farm, arts and guild unit will become more productive generating more income making the center fully sustainable.
