Empowering Mothers Through Learning and Community

By Tim Holmes | Operations Coordinator

Pregnancy can be a joyful yet vulnerable time, and the chance to learn and share together can be life-changing for many women. Antenatal Clubs provide a safe space where expectant mothers can gain vital knowledge about pregnancy and newborn care, ask questions, and support one another through shared experiences. This peer connection helps women feel less isolated, more confident, and better prepared for birth and motherhood — while also spreading life-saving information throughout their communities.

That’s why, earlier this year, HHA launched Antenatal Clubs at our partner community health centre in Haiti. These clubs give pregnant women essential guidance on danger signs in pregnancy, nutrition, breastfeeding, and birth preparedness. The response has been overwhelming, with some mothers attending even when they don’t have scheduled consultations. In a setting like Haiti — where the health system is fragile — the opportunity for pregnant women to learn together under the guidance of health professionals helps reduce fear and uncertainty around childbirth.

Another new initiative for young mothers is underway at our Kajo-Keji clinic in South Sudan, where 20 mothers and expectant women recently gathered to learn knitting skills and make baby blankets for their newborns. While there, they also accessed vital healthcare, including vaccinations.

These projects are just one example of how HHA is empowering women and improving maternal and child health. You can discover more about this work — alongside many other life-changing initiatives — in HHA’s newly published 2024/25 Global Impact Report (linked below).

Thank you for helping make this impact possible.
