The project involves outreach activities to raise awareness about eye health, conducting thorough eye screenings in schools using specialized equipment, providing spectacles and vital vitamins to 100 underprivileged poor Somali children in need, and facilitating referrals to hospitals for further treatment. Through these efforts, the project aims to ensure comprehensive eye care for children, addressing avoidable vision impairments and promoting long-term eye health in Galkaio district.
With prevalence rate of blindness estimated at 1.2%, over 100,000 individuals suffer needlessly in Somalia. Cataracts, refractive errors, and glaucoma are primary causes. Globally, uncorrected refractive errors account for 43% of visual impairments, with 80% being avoidable. In children, untreated vision issues not only hinder academic performance but also risk the development of amblyopia. Avoidable blindness is a pressing concern, particularly among school-going children in town.
The project aims to address the problem of avoidable blindness & vision impairments among school children through: - Awareness-raising among communities about the importance of eye health, early detection & treatment of vision impairments. - Conducting eye screenings in schools to identify children with vision impairments. - Providing access to essential eye care services, (provision of spectacles, medication, & referrals for surgical interventions, ensuring critical treatment to improve vision.
This project will foster a culture of eye health through awareness, screenings campaigns in schools to identify children with vision impairments including refractive errors, cataracts, & glaucoma. It will also improve access to essential eye care services including eye spectacles, medication, and referrals for the most vulnerable children leaving in internally displaced settlements in Galkayo and will eventually reduce rates of avoidable blindness promoting lifelong eye health among children.
