Fundacion Azulado's goal is to eradicate child sexual abuse and maltreatment in Ecuador. We have already impacted the lives of over 30,000 elementary school students and their families by deploying the My Shield (Mi Escudo) child sexual abuse prevention program in over 90 low-income schools. This program teaches children self-protective behavior, boosts self-esteem and assertiveness, and helps kids learn which adults they can trust. We also train parents on healthy child rearing.
Every day, children grow up without the tools to recognize or stop sexual abuse-often in places that should be safe, like schools and homes. According to the World Health Organization, 1 in 5 women and 1 in 13 men worldwide experienced sexual abuse during childhood. This is not only a global issue. It is happening in Ecuador-and it can be prevented.
At Fundacion Azulado, we work to prevent child sexual abuse before it happens. Through our evidence-based program Mi Escudo (My Shield), we equip children, families, and teachers with the knowledge and tools to: Recognize unsafe situations Set boundaries and say "no" Identify trusted adults and seek help Strengthen self-esteem and emotional resilience We don't wait for abuse to occur. We prevent it.
A 10-year-old girl joined the Mi Escudo program at her school. During one session, she realized that something happening with someone close to her did not feel right. For a long time, she had stayed silent-unsure and afraid to speak. Through the program, she learned to trust her feelings and identify a safe adult. Soon after, she found the courage to speak. The situation stopped. She was no longer alone. That is the power of prevention.
