Thousands of older adults in Puerto Rico are on the brink of homelessness due to extreme poverty, lack of income, rising living costs, and barriers to accessing essential services. Many struggle to afford food, rent, healthcare, and daily necessities, while also facing isolation and abandonment. Our Community Development Program provides direct support to over 1,000 older adults, offering housing stability, food security, health services, and social connection to prevent homelessness.
Older adults in Puerto Rico face severe financial hardship, social isolation, and barriers to healthcare and technology, leaving them vulnerable to eviction and homelessness. Many lack the resources to renew medical plans, cover essential treatments, or even secure transportation to doctor visits. Loneliness and abandonment further exacerbate their challenges, leading to deteriorating physical and mental health. Without intervention, many will continue to struggle to meet their basic needs.
Our team of social workers, case managers, and community leaders visits vulnerable communities to provide essential services. We offer food assistance, hygiene kits, and emergency grocery bags to ensure older adults do not go hungry. Through health fairs and medical guidance, we help them access critical healthcare and mental health support. Capacity-building workshops teach them to use technology for housing subsidies, medical services, and social benefits. Support groups build resilience.
By providing immediate relief and sustainable solutions, this project helps older adults remain in their homes with dignity. Access to healthcare, housing support, and financial guidance empowers them to secure vital services. With stronger support networks and essential resources, older adults will have the stability they need to avoid homelessness and lead healthier, more connected lives.
