Julio Otoni project has a new blog that we encourage you to visit: www.juliootoni.wordpress.com. The blog allows the sponsors and the community to interact with the activities that we post. In 2010, a major initiative of the center is a series of capacity building activies for the mothers of the children that are benefitted by the after school activities. Our vision is that if they can generate income they will be able to stay more at home close to their children and also to be more supportative of the activities of the center. Last April the favela faced a major challenge due to the heavy rain that has distroyed a lot of houses and infraestructure not only in Julio Otoni but all over Rio. News have gone around the world as around 1,000 people died. Fortunately in Julio Otoni nobody died but many lost their houses. The center has been helping the local population to negotiate with the municipality more stable urban solutions We believe that it would be essencial to take advantage of the opportunity to improve people's life. The work with the children continues to be our main focus. 57 people are served in the after school programs. Most of the present activities of the center are offered by volunteers.
