We are just coming into summer!
This means it's finally getting warmer, and the children are excited for summer vacation. This month we are featuring images from our capoeira classes - it is one of our favorites because it is not only a Brazilian tradition, it also combines excercise with team building and learning to play music. Capoeira is a martial art that was initially developed in the Quilombos - self-freed slaves' neighborhoods in the countryside. It is a symbol of resistance and pride to Brazilians, and boys and girls practice it alike.
In addition, tomorrow we are hosting a special event, as it is children's day in Brazil! we are having a little celebration with music, snacks, games and painting for the families of Julio Otoni. We will post photos soon!
Here are some images from our classes - a very big thank you to our donors that help us create a space for fun, learning and safety in the Julio Otoni favela. Every donation counts to make a huge difference in the life of a child from the community!
