Dear Friends,

Project Soar is sending gratitude to You, for your continued support.

Did you know that May 28th is Menstrual Hygiene Day? This internationally recognized day was introduced in 2014 and celebrated for the first time in Morocco in 2021 through Project Soar's partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Morocco. This year on May 28th Menstrual Hygiene Day, the National Council for Human Rights (CNDH), the UNFPA Morocco and Project Soar organised a workshop under the theme: “Equality, right to sexual and reproductive health and well being of women and girls.” Mr. Mora, the UNFPA representative in Morocco, Amina Bouayach, CNDH president, and our very own Founder and Executive Director Maryam Montague discussed how our three organizations can work together to fully realize the rights of teen girls in Morocco, especially related to health services and menstrual hygiene management. The main objective of the workshop was to highlight the difficulties surrounding menstruation that undermine the rights of women and girls, especially the most marginalized ones that we serve through the Soar program.

Today, Morocco has 3 million teen girls and young women, more than half of whom have reported being shocked by the onset of their first menstrual period. But the lack of knowledge about menstrual health is not the only challenge teen girls are facing: it is the stigma and preconceived notions surrounding the issue that risk excluding girls from public spaces. Taboos and false beliefs create an environment where women and girls are deprived of a basic right: to ensure their hygiene and health. Infection risks become considerable. The lack of access to menstrual hygiene products and the absence of safe and private sanitation facilities in schools can lead the most vulnerable among these teen girls to drop out of school, putting them at risk of child marriage and early pregnancy.

Since the beginning of 2022, thanks to your support, we have provided 978 BeGirl Menstrual Kits to teen girls living in 21 disadvantaged communities across Morocco. In total, your support has allowed us to provide 3,162 period kits to 1,500+ girls since we launched this campaign in 2020. That is why we are raising our project goal to prepare for our next cohort of Soar Girls this fall. Living on less than $1/day on average, Soar Girls are not always able to afford menstrual products, which jeopardizes their attendance in school. Our solution provides period-positive menstrual education and 2 kits per girl that aid menstrual management worry-free for up to 3 years.

Thank you for your continued commitment to helping fight period poverty one menstrual kit at a time!

Sincerely,

The Project Soar Team
