Results of a Post-distribution Study

Results of a Post-distrbution Study for Nets Distrbuted in Rural Zambia in October 2010

Introduction

We would like to thank our friends who have supported Project Mosquito Nets which provides education on malaria prevention and long lasting insecticide treated nets to women and children vulnerable to malaria in Zambia. This report discusses briefly the results of a post-distribution survey for distrbution of nets in rural area in Zambia in October 2010. Post Distribution Survey Results

A post distribution survey was carried out in April 2012, approximately 18 months after the original distribution in October 2010. The survey was administered to 100 beneficiary households in the Ndeke compound in Kapiri-Mposhi, Zambia. The goal of this study was to assess the mosquito net usage, condition of the nets distrbuted, and the need for nets in this community. Based on the survey results we were able to draw the following conclusions:

Most of the beneficiaries are using the nets correctly with a few not using them in the proper fashion. Recipients of nets who were not using them in the correct manner were advised on the correct usage of the nets at the time of this survey.
The condition of the nets in the sampled houses was mostly very good. A few recipients reported that the nets were in a poor condition and this could be due to the fact that the nets were used over spring or metal beds. In a few cases, rats had made holes in the nets. In two households it was reported that the nets received were stolen.
The usage of nets is 98%.
The average number of people sleeping under one net is a little over 2. This implies that one net is helping prevent malaria for two people. We are happy with this result as this reduces the cost of malaria prevention.
Need for nets - The number of nets received per household is lower than the number of sleeping places in each household. Most households have 3-5 sleeping spaces, but received only one or two nets. This implies that the community will benefit from additional nets for each household.

Conclusion

The nets distributed in Kapiri-Mposhi, Zambia are in good condition and are being used for malaria prevention by the beneficiary households. The distribution of these nets has gone a long way in educating community members about malaria prevention, and reducing the incidence of malaria in the community. Since, the last distribution was successful and the need for nets is huge, we are raising funds at this time for another distribution in September 2012.

An Update on Project Mosquito Nets - Nets Distribution in Zambia in 2011

Power of Love Foundation’s (POL) Project Mosquito Nets (PMN) program provides long lasting insecticide treated bed nets to women and children vulnerable to Malaria in Zambia. Power of Love’s PMN was launched in Zambia in April 2010. To date more than 3800 long lasting mosquito nets have been distributed in one urban are and one rural area in Zambia. We would like to sincerely thank donors who continue to support this program. It is with your support that we were able to provide 1500 insecticide treated nets to women and children vulnerable to Malaria in Zambia in 2011.

Achievements of Project Mosquito Nets in 2011

We were able to provide 1500 insecticide treated nets to women and children vulnerable to Malaria in Zambia in 2011.

1. In January 2011, we provided 500 long lasting insecticide treated nets in Lusaka, Zambia.

2. In October 2011 we provided 1000 long lasting insecticide treated nets to people vulnerable to Malaria in Kapiri-Mposhi, a rural area in Zambia.

3. Education on prevention of malaria, proper treatment and maintenance of nets was provided to recipients of nets.

Attached is a picture of a volunteer noting the weight of the child and asking his mom about the health of her child at the nets distribution event in October 2011.

Impact of the Distribution

Provision of bed nets and education on malaria prevention and proper use and maintenance of nets will go a long way in eradicating malaria from the community. We expect to see a marked reduction in the incidence of malaria due to: (i) lower infection rates will lead to higher school attendance, and (ii) health of people living with HIV/AIDS will improve as their immune system is not further compromised due to malaria.

Future Plans

1. The next distribution of a 1000 nets is planned for September 2012 before the malaria season in Zambia.

2. At this time we are raising funds to provide an additional 1000 long lasting insecticide treated nets (LLIN’s) in one rural areas in Zambia in 2012. Your support to this program will go a long way in preventing malaria and keeping the children healthy and in school.

An Update on Project Mosquito Nets - Nets Distribution in Zambia in October 2011

Introduction:

Power of Love Foundation’s (POL) Project Mosquito Nets program provides long lasting insecticide treated bed nets to women and children vulnerable to Malaria in Zambia. We would like to sincerely thank donors who continue to support this program. It is with your support that we were able to provide 1000 insecticide treated nets to women and children vulnerable to Malaria in and around Lusaka, Zambia in October 2011.

Distribution of Nets in Zambia

Recipients were identified through community outreach, including door-to-door home visits and were chosen based on need. For example, households with children under the age of 15 years living with unemployed grandparents, children of parents who were unemployed or too poor to purchase nets, and children of HIV positive parents. Each beneficiary household was given one net with the understanding that the net will be used by 1-3 family members.

Location of the Distribution of Nets

1. Site: Kapiri-Mposhi, Zambia. Nets Distributed: 700

The majority of the nets were distributed to residents of the Ndeke compound in Kapiri-Mposhi, Zambia. Kapiri-Mposhi is a town of 75,000 residents located approximately 220 km away from Lusaka. The Power of Love Foundation partnered with “Shalom Project” (a local non-profit organization) to identify beneficiaries and complete distribution activities. The need for nets is huge in the Ndeke compound of Kapiri-Mposhi as most of its residents are unemployed and too poor to afford bed nets. In the rainy season in particular, this area becomes waterlogged and swampy creating an ideal breeding ground for mosquitos. In addition, Kapiri has high rates of HIV infection as it is the transport link for Tanzania.

In 2010, Power of Love had distributed 1200 insecticide treated nets to the residents of Ndeke compound and one net was being used by 2-3 people on average. We are seeing a reduction in malaria cases as a result of the provision of nets in 2010 and in 2011. The Table below gives the number of malaria cases for the period, May to September for 2010 and 2011. This data was collected from the local clinic and shows a drop of 26% in the number of malaria cases in 2011.

2. Distribution Site: Chiyuyu, Zambia. Nets Received: 200

Chiyuyu is approximately 45 km away from Lusaka. The area includes a swamp land and the river, both of which contribute to the high rates of malaria in the region. With over 5,000 people spread across 7 villages, the single local clinic is overworked with malaria cases. The clinic had requested nets from the Power of Love in order to reduce the number of malaria cases.

3. Distribution Site: Lupwa Lowabumi, Zambia. Nets Received: 50

Lupwa Lowabumi is a rural town approximately 50 km from Lusaka. The Zambian Association of Child and Youth Care workers partnered with the Lupwa Lowabumi community to form a Safe Park (community youth program) and nets were provided to participating youth.

4. Distribution Site: Lusaka, Zambia. Nets Received: 50

Power of Love operates a pediatric AIDS care clinic in the Matero Compound in Lusaka and children enrolled in this program were provided with nets.
